Do Claude artifacts show up in Google?

Fetch any public artifact URL and the HTML contains a robots meta tag set to noindex, nofollow. That is Anthropic asking search engines to keep the page out of results and to ignore the links on it, and the major engines honour it.

It is a request, not a control. Nothing stops a person opening the link, and nothing stops a crawler that ignores the tag. The tag governs listings, not access.

A Reddit comment, a Hacker News reply, a Discord log that got published, a GitHub issue, a company blog post: these are ordinary web pages with ordinary indexing. When one of them contains your artifact address, that page is indexed and the address goes with it.

This is exactly how the index behind this site was built. Not one record came from crawling claude.ai. Every one came from a page somewhere else that quoted the link, which is why searching your own artifact title here sometimes finds it even though Google will not show the artifact page itself.

People check by pasting their artifact URL into Google, seeing no result, and concluding it is private. The noindex tag guarantees that outcome whether the artifact is live, deleted, or seen by ten thousand people.

A better check is to search for the title, in quotes, without the URL. That finds the pages that mention it, which is where exposure actually lives.

Unpublishing kills the artifact link immediately, and anyone following it afterwards gets a not-found page. It does not remove the Reddit thread, the blog post, or Google's memory of either.

For those, ask the site that published the link to take it down, then use Google's removal tool for outdated content once the page is gone. That is slower and it is the only route, because those pages were never yours.
